The "open access" publication model is contributing towards the generation of a very valuable world repository of knowledge created by academic institutions. In the last three years, the number of these repositories has increased considerably on a worldwide basis and the most prestigious organisations are determined to disseminate most of the knowledge that they generate and that is financed by public funds. This "open access" movement has also spread in Spain. In February 2007, the number of records incorporated totalled more than 30,000 documents.
This presentation shows the state of the art of the open access publication model, analysing basic aspects like the impact of the publications, the funding models and the number of repositories currently in existence. Moreover, focussing on the Spanish case, there is an overview of the main initiatives that have developed this type of repositories in our country.
