Art and Statistics

Lecture by Mark Hansen held on November 13th, 2007 within the context of Visualizar 07, a broad program of research, reflection and production activities about data visualization and its social, artistic and cultural applications. The first edition took place at Medialab-Prado from November 12th through 28th, 2007.

Human beings today live in a world where we are surrounded by data; actually, we are inside data. Sensors, passwords, and control rooms handling massive amounts of information on all manner of subjects are some examples of the purpose of this study by statistician Mark Hansen. He has said that what is told receives attention, what is not told is lost. Data capture by citizens is a practice that is becoming increasingly important in the study of data visualization. Through two of his most significant projects, Listening Post and Moveable Type, Mark Hansen has given form to huge databases, not only to visualize but also to transform them.
