Presentation of Goteo – Crowdfunding for Open DNA projects

03.11.2011 12:00h

Place: Medialab-Prado · Plaza de las Letras, C/ Alameda, 15 Madrid

Goteo is the first social crowd-funding network to support free, open philosophy initiatives. It is configured as a social network for collective funding (monetary contributions) and distributed collaboration (services, infrastructures, micro-tasks, and other resources) to serve as a catalyst for autonomous development of initiative that generate new opportunities for continuously improving society and enriching common goods and resources.

At this presentation session of the platform the attendees (public and media) can practice crowd-funding with the projects launched and that way, they will experience what collective financing means.

What is Goteo?

Goteo is a social crowd-funding network to support free, open philosophy initiatives. It is configured as a social network for collective funding (monetary contributions) and distributed collaboration (services, infrastructures, micro-tasks, and other resources) to serve as a catalyst for autonomous development of initiative that generate new opportunities for continuously improving society and enriching common goods and resources . A new crowd-funding platform to invest “venture capital” in projects that contribute to developing the commons, free knowledge and/or open source.

We will speak briefly about the key points that distinguish Goteo: it is committed to the commons, to what is free and open, collective returns, two rounds of financing and a network of local nodes. We then make a practical, playful presentation, like the one used throughout the entire process co-designing Goteo, based on participatory workshops that put analogue modes to the test, showing how this social crowd-funding network works.

The members of the media who come to Medialab-Prado will be given 10€ to invest in one of the projects launched by Goteo, so they can have first-hand experience of what collective financing is. To invest responsibly, an assessment must be made of how the projects contribute to the commons, taking into account the type of licences they use, individual rewards and collective returns that they offer, and so on. The next day, these contributions will be added to the total amount raised to date for those projects.

This money we can invest during the presentation is from 'Venture Capital', a fund for social investment through Goteo, comprised of contributions from public institutions, businesses and other private entities, as a complement to individual contributions, to foster co-responsible investments in projects supported by civil society. On this occasion, the contribution comes from the Gabinete de Iniciativa Joven (Youth Initiative Council) of the Junta de Extremadura.
At the end there will be an appetizer with the people who direct Goteo as well as representatives from three of the projects that launch the social network: #bookcamping, Move Commons and Tu derecho a saber.
