Free Intelectual Production

07.02.2008 19:00h

Place: Medialab-Prado, Plaza de las Letras, Madrid

In this presentation, Jesús González Barahona will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of free intellectual production that occur as a result of the use of free software. What are the societal implications of this type of licensing, whereby an author grants permission allowing third parties to copy or modify his work?

Free software pioneered a path that many other areas of intellectual production are following nowadays, resulting in free intellectual production. The authors who are making it possible expressly grant their permission to third parties to copy and modify their works. Beyond the advantages and disadvantages of this new licensing format, there are many implications-- for the authors, for those who receive the work, and for society as a whole—that are worth examining. During the session, the concept of free intellectual production will be presented. Its relation to free software will be explained, several of its major consequences will be explored, and other relevant matters will be discussed.
