"Data does not simply exist 'out there' somewhere, just waiting for us to pluck it from the passive ether of objectivity. Data is constructed, selected, refined and critiqued; and data collection itself is a craft, whether undertaken by scientists, by authority or by individual members of the public. Regarding environmental data, the crafting of data is especially important to consider, because how we use data to take action upon our own environments directly impacts others who share our spaces, our cities and our planet. This talk will discuss the craft of data and the processes of crowdsourcing, with specific reference to http://www.pachube.com/ a platform for sharing and discovering realtime sensor, energy and environmental data from around the world."
