Jeffrey Huang

Jeffrey Huang is the Director of the Media and Design Laboratory and a Full Professor at the Faculty of Computer and Communication Sciences,  

and at the Faculty of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC), at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). With his partner Muriel Waldvogel, he also heads the design firm Convergeo.

His work examines the possibilities of merging physical and virtual environments to enhance our everyday lives. His current projects include the examination of emerging architectural typologies, such as innovative workspaces and the bank of the future; experimentation with novel, organic approaches to architectural design; data-driven visualizations; and, more generally, the integration of physical computing into architecture and contemporary cities. Recent projects include Newscocoons, Sentient Ecologies, Swissnex, and Interactive Wallpaper.

Prior to joining the EPFL in 2006, he was a professor at the Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) and Harvard Graduate  School of Design (GSD). He was also a Visiting Fellow at Stanford University's d.school, and Designer-in-Residence at Fuji Xerox Palo  Alto Research Lab. A native of Rome, Italy, and a Swiss citizen of Chinese origins, Huang received his DiplArch from ETHZ and his Master's and Doctoral degrees from Harvard, where he was awarded the Gerald McCue Medal.
