Nuria Valverde

is a researcher in Science History at the Instituto de Historia (CSIC, Madrid), where she is developing the project “El ojo cautivado: técnicas y prácticas de observación científica en imágenes” (The Captivated Eye: Techniques and Practices in the Scientific Observation of Images) (2005-2008). Her intent is to explore cultural and technological aspects of the evolution of scientific images related mainly to microscopic but also physiological observation in the 18th and 19th centuries. Recently, she published her book Actos de precisión. Instrumentos científicos, opinion pública y economía moral en la Ilustración española (Acts of Precision: Scientific Instruments, Public Opinion, and Moral Economy (CSIC, 2007) about the impact of different observation practices performed by experts and laymen and ways of producing precision. She has participated in various projects and initiatives about problems in scientific governance and complexity including Foros híbridos (2004) and “Nuevas formas de participación ciudadana en Internet” (New Forms of Citizen Participation on the Internet) (2004-2005); as well as in the exhibits “Monstruos y seres imaginarios” (Monsters and Imaginary Beings) at the National Library of Spain (2000), and “Madrid, Ciencia y Corte” (Madrid: Science and the Court) (1999). Other works include “Los mundos de la ciencia en la ilustración española” (The Worlds of Science in the Spanish Enlightenment) (in collaboration with A. Lafuente, FECYT, 2003).
