Simone Jones

Has been making kinetic sculpture since 1989. Most recently, her work has expanded to include film, video and performance. Jones exploits various mechanical behaviors, such as repetition and speed, to maximize the viewer's perceptual connection to her work. In this regard, her sculptures become performers, animating the viewer through a shared experience of time and space. Recent exhibitions include Knock at the Walter Philips Gallery, The Banff Center, Alberta, Resonance: The Electromagnetic Bodies Project, a touring exhibition between Canada and Europe, Points of Entry, a touring exhibition throughout New Zealand and Australia, Displacement, at the Regina Gouger Miller Gallery, Pittsburgh and Sculpture Now, at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Pittsburgh. Jones has received numerous grants for her work including a 2003 Media Arts Grant from the Canada Council and a 1999 Arts Toronto Protégé Award. Jones has served on the Board of Directors of the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) and was the Chair of the Board of Directors of InterAccess Electronic Media Arts Centre. Born in a Red Cross outpost in northern Ontario, Canada, Jones graduated from the Ontario College of Art with a concentration in Experimental Art and received her MFA in Sculpture Installation from York University in Toronto. Jones was recently the Jill Kraus Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, with a joint appointment in the School of Art and Robotics.
